Specialist Lights and Torches

9557692_sTraffic cones have been with us since 1940, and have come a long way since the original wooden pyramid shapes. Modern traffic cones are made of plastic or rubber with reflective strips for night time visibility.

Also called traffic pylons, road cones, highway cones, safety cones, witch’s hat, or construction cones they are used for temporary traffic management in the event of road works, traffic accidents or major public gatherings.

Cones can also be used to temporarily alert us to other dangers, such as slippery paths or other hazards, and can often be found indoors to mark off areas that have been temporarily closed.

Traffic cones are notoriously linked to student capers, and the most famous example is The Duke of Wellington statue in Edinburgh, which has the Duke regularly wearing a traffic cone as a hat. This statue is featured in “Lonely Planet” as a “most bizarre monument” because of the regular cone wearing and in honour of Scotland’s success at the 2012 Olympics the Duke was even given a gold traffic cone.

Cone Lights

Like the actual traffic cone, cone lighting has come a long way from the gas lanterns that were used originally.

EezyViewSOCOLamp2A reliable power source is vital for emergency portable lighting, and you need to be sure you choose the right battery and the right charger for your lights.

So what is the difference in batteries, and how do you decide which is best for your purpose.

Battery Description Advantages Disadvantages
Single Use Alkaline The most widely used type of battery, named for their Alkaline electrolyte, these batteries became a popular alternative to zinc during the 970’s. Long shelf life. Non-toxic and easy to dispose of Short life when used in high-drain devices like digital cameras
Rechargeable Alkaline Similar to single use alkaline batteries Easy to recharge, and loses charge more slowly than other rechargeable. Also able to hold a charge for longer. more economical than single use, these are also more eco-friendly as they can be re-used a number of times Alkaline rechargeable batteries have a lower capacity than other rechargeables. Also, limited lifespan, as every time they are recharged they lose a portion of their capacity
Single Use Lithium Single use Lithium batteries are usually Lithium-photo batteries The ability to cope with power surges makes lithium ideal for cameras and remote controlled toys. Lithium batteries have a long shelf life, lasting up to 10 years Lithium batteries are usually far more expensive than other non-rechargeable batteries.
Rechargeable Lithium Lithium-ion batteries are used to power laptops, cell phones, and camcorders. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have an excellent power to rate ratio. Lithium ion batteries are usually recharged either in a special recharger or when installed in the unit they power. Long-lasting and usually easy to recharge without being removed from the unit they are powering Li-ion batteries cannot be manufactured in these sizes because they provide a higher voltage than standard AA and AAA batteries. However, Li-ion batteries are becoming the most popular battery choice for handheld power tools due to their high energy density (charge capacity) and rapid recharge rate. Lithium batteries are usually far more expensive than other  non-rechargeable batteries. Lithium batteries contain toxins and require specialist disposal
Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) The forerunner to the NiMH, NiCad rechargeable batteries are now nearly obsolete.  Ni-Cad batteries were invented in 1899 and have been used in a wide variety of applications. Because they are not limited by size NiCad batteries can be used to power large items like computers. NiCad batteries are considerably cheaper than NiMH alternatives. ower. NiCad have a lower capacity than other rechargeables. Their charging time is relatively slow, at 14 to 16 hours, and they only produce 1.2 volts, compared with 1.5 volts offered by alkaline batteries. NiCad also contain toxic metals that require hazardous waste disposal
Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) NiMH rechargeable batteries offer a safer and more powerful alternative to NiCad. Ni-MH are available in standard battery sizes, and especially in AA and AAA sizes, Ni-MH are available in standard battery sizes, and especially in AA and AAA sizes, Ni-MH batteries have a considerably higher capacity than Ni-Cd, by whatever measurement is used. Generally speaking, they hold about twice the charge of Ni-Cd batteries. The main disadvantage of the NiMH is that it comes in different capacities, so you need to check that the NiMH batteries you are using have sufficient capacity for you device, and also that they are compatible with the charger you are using. NiMH batteries also have less voltage than alkaline batteries, and a high self discharge rate, and therefore a short shelf-life, so not suitable for rarely activated devices like emergency flashlights and smoke detectors.
Zinc The original battery for use in portable equipment like radios and torches, Zinc-carbon and Zinc-chloride batteries have almost completely been replaced by alkaline batteries. . However, reductions in the price of alkalines have made both Zinc-Carbon and Zinc-Chloride batteries all but obsolete. Initially a much cheaper alternative to alkaline batteries, available in AA, C, and D sizes Far less capacity than alkaline batteries, and also more susceptible to leaking than alkaline batteries

·       Ni-Cd/Ni-MH Fast Charger & Halo Plus2

Environmental considerations have led to the introduction of Nickel Metal Hydride battery options for the Halo Plus2 range of rechargeable torches. To complete our product range we have added fast chargers for both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries.

The fast charger design is based on the very latest technology and incorporates features which optimise battery performance, life and safety. The charge time will depend on the capacity of the batteries, but on average, 3 hours should see most batteries fully charged (at 10 degrees C). The charger then switches to a trickle charge or standby mode.

Polarity and voltage surge protection is now standard. The circuit is also provided with checks for charging at low temperatures, if the cells are too cold they will not be charged until their temperature rises.

The charger circuit is designed to operate at 12 – 30 Volts, for 230V charging an optional mains adapter is available. For vehicle charging there is provision for sensing the vehicle battery voltage, the circuit will switch itself off before the battery reaches the point of not being able to start the engine.

chicken eggIf you only keep a couple of chickens around in order to have fresh eggs every day, then raising chickens is fairly simple, but if you are thinking about supplying the market with fresh chicken and eggs, then what you don’t know about chicken farming could definitely hurt both you and your budding enterprise.

Unlike the chickens in cartoons of old, nests don’t come complete with little tubes in which the eggs roll down to a waiting basket, ready for you to pick up and cart away. Proper handling and maintaining of both your chickens and their eggs can make all the difference, not only in the number of eggs that are produced, but also the numbers of chicks that successfully hatch twenty-one days after they are laid.

Raising chickens means setting up chicken houses properly, maintaining clean and sterile conditions for producing uniform sized eggs, and knowing what to do once you gather and transfer the fertilized eggs into the incubator. Sure, you could let the chickens do it, but in today’s fast-paced, competitive world, you need to be ahead of the game, and take the proper steps to get maximum efficiency in your egg and chick production. We all know that to do that you need happy, healthy chickens, with optimum hatching conditions. There is more to hatching an egg than just putting it into an incubator and leaving it until it hatches. There is also a lot more to maintaining your chicken hatchery and chicken houses than just feeding the birds. Precautions must be taken for the safety of the chicks as well as the hens and roosters. Chicken to rooster ratios must be exactly right.

MP900446590You also need to know what to do and how to care for your chicks once they are born. For example, chicks need to be introduced to a perch once they reach six weeks of age. Chicken houses should be kept locked at all times and conditions, and personnel should be strictly monitored. Checking your chickens for avian diseases, and knowing the procedures to help prevent them, is also very important. Then, if unfortunate circumstances arise, and you notice that you have some sick birds, you need to know what to do to prevent further infestation. The last thing you need is for influenza to spread to all the rest of your chickens. Too little action too late could result in massive losses, and no business can withstand that. Also, in some cases, as in the avian flu, the potential for spreading to humans can also be quite dangerous.

Keeping chickens can be fun, and  if you do it right, financially rewarding too!

Candling Eggsegg candling

What is Egg-candling?

Egg candling sounds like a rather ineffective way of cooking an egg-but it actually has nothing to do with cooking at all. It is simply a generic term sometimes used to describe egg inspection. Candles used to be used to pass light through an egg in order to inspect the egg for diseases.
Although candles are no longer used for egg inspection, the term “egg candling” is still sometimes used.

Eggs are inspected to ensure that they are fertile and also allows identification of diseased eggs.

Ideally eggs are candled after about a week of incubation, and at this time it should be possible to see how the embryo is developing. Viable eggs will have little spidery “veins” and maybe even some movement within the egg; non-viable or in-fertile eggs will be clear and can be removed. “Addled” or diseased eggs will show up cloudy and even spotty and then should be removed and disposed of carefully.

After a further 7 days it is a good idea to inspect again, and remove any eggs that look like there has been no further development. Sometime eggs that are failing to develop will not need candling – the smell is enough to let you know!

How to Candle Eggs

Egg candling needs to be fast and efficient – shining a light through an egg for too long will also heat it and that is not a good idea. Fortunately we have come a long way from old-fashioned naked flames, and there are highly specialized and efficient torches designed specially for egg-candling.

White Knight manufacture egg inspection lights that are reliable and easy to use, and have been used regularly by DEFRA
